1929 in New York City, the son of the late Armine and Harutiun Avakian. He was raised in
Manhattan with his late sister Doris (Avakian) D'Addario. He went on to serve in the U.S. Navy
from 1948 to 1952 as a radio operator and navigator in an all-weather squadron, whose motto
was "We fly when the birds walk". After leaving the service he met and married his wife of 59 years, Rose (Tashjian) Avakian, and moved to Connecticut. They lived in Stratford, CT for over 30 years, where they raised their children Harry, Steven, Carol, and the late David Avakian.
Herb spent most of his career in the U.S. Postal Service, first as a letter carrier, and then in the
maintenance dept. in the Bridgeport facility. He retired in 1995, and moved to Old Lyme in
1999, where he spent the remainder of his life. Herb had a strong curiosity, which made him into
an avid reader, usually working on more than one book at a time. Boyhood visits with relatives
in upstate New York brought him close to West Point, that spurred a lifelong love of military
history. He fondly recalled his time in the Navy, and liked all things nautical. He never
completely gave up his only two vices in life: Pall Malls and rooting for the New York Yankees.
Herbie was a genial type of guy, and will be missed by everyone who knew him.
